a new term

I propose the term rampant fantasy for books that:

... pile concept upon concept while the previous concept hasn't been adequately absorbed in the story. It goes a bit like: magicians, talking animals and now we have mermaids, WTF? What is this book about? Are you trying to dazzle the reader with as much fantastic crap as you can come up with, without allowing the readers to understand it all, without properly integrating all this in the story, and then you use all this overwhelming stuff to masquerade as plot?

Incidentally, this trend is not limited to fantasy proper. It happens in science fiction, too, but always in the part of science fiction that is 'indistinguishable from magic'.

Blergh. Yes, this does relate to a book I've just finished reading.
Why do I get the feeling that the push for school canteens to become 'healthy canteens' is nothing more than a ruse to massively increase prices?

Why do I get the feeling that this push absolves the parents from the responsibility for having to provide the children with healthy food options?

Parents blaming Maccas for their kids getting fat? WTF?

My son has a friend who shall remain unnamed. The boy weighs 72kg.

Hellooooo? That's 12kg more than me.

Exactly who feeds this boy? Not the canteen.

Look at yourselves, people, at your own behaviour. Don't blame anyone else if your kids are getting fat. YOU buy the chips. YOU buy the soft drink. YOU give him chicken nuggets when he comes home from school. YOU give him the money to buy his lunch at the canteen. How much he eats is more important than what he eats. More important still, he could easily walk to school.

Sorry. This sort of stuff rubs me up the wrong way.

Ambassador - progress

My husband has just upgraded our internet download from 10GB to 25GB per month, so, yay, I can actually use the internet without it crawling to a stop today (before - if we went over the monthly quota, we were bumped down to a very sloooooooooow download speed).

So... let's do a wordmeter thingy, seeing as I've actually started a new draft of Ambassador. I want it to be about 90K, but I give myself some leeway, so I've made the target length 100K.

Today's progress:

Zokutou word meterZokutou word meter
5,760 / 100,000

I am doing a total rewrite of chapter 1. The basic situation remains the same, but I'm doing different worldbuilding and hope to have a first scene that is more obviously related to the rest of the plot.
